Changing money in Venice

Avoid the kiosks with signs saying ‘Change’, ‘Cambio’ etc if you can. In Italy, as elsewhere, a bank or cash machine will usually give you a better deal – up to 10% better – which may not make a lot of difference for small amounts, but really mounts up over time or if you need a large sum to pay for your apartment on arrival in venice. Don’t be fooled by a sign saying ‘No Commission’ – they’ll get their money back by giving a rotten exchange rate! If the exchange rate looks good, you can bet there’s a huge commission (which will be ‘displayed’ in tiny almost illegible print somewhere to satisfy legal requirements.)
